Visitors enjoy a wealth of traditions at Hacienda El Viejo, a working sugar cane hacienda with its own private national refuge of 1,148 hectares which main activities strive to show tourists the ancient culture of Guanacaste.
A ride along the sugar cane fields takes guests to an old 2-story farm house that dates back to 1840. Then, at the Sugar Mill (Trapiche), they can observe the “ox-operated sugar mill” and take part in tortilla making at La Casita.
Guests can also take a motor boat ride to Palo Verde National Park that has the highest concentration of waterfowl and wading birds, both native and migratory.
